  7. This is the fifth in a series of free update patches to PageStream3. This
  8. update implements more features and fixes many problems. The main new
  9. feature of this release is the implementation of text color, fill and
  10. stroke attributes. There are other new and implemented features in this
  11. release, as well as the fixing of many bugs. Text entry and printing
  12. speed is unchanged in this release. Landscape printing to non-PostScript
  13. printers will be implemented in the next release.

  16. TUTORIAL LESSONS
  17. ----------------
  18.  
  19. We recommend not attempting tutorial lessons 2, 3 and 4 at this time
  20. because a few of the required features are not implemented. Lessons 1 and
  21. 5 can be done now. Please refer to the manual errata section of the help
  22. system for last minute manual changes before completing the tutorial
  23. lessons. We expect that at least lesson 2 if not 3 as well will be
  24. functional in the next release.

  26. NOTES FOR LESSON 1
  27. - page 53, #3. The window will remain titled. In this version of
  28.   PageStream3, template windows are titled (but you are prevented from
  29.   accidentally overwriting them).

  31. - page 94, #1. You must create a new document (the size is unimportant)
  32.   before starting this lesson.
  33. - page 94, #4. If your text column frame has a gray background after
  34.   changing the color to Yellow, you are in four color mode. After you

  46. CHANGES FROM 3.0e TO 3.0f

  49. - Fixed a document loading/saving bug that crept into the release version
  50.   of 3.0e. Documents with groups and drawings could not be loaded or
  51.   saved.

  60. - Implemented text color/fill/line attributes.

  78. - You can no longer base a style tag on itself, which is clearly illogical.

  80. TEXT IMPORT:
  81. - Updated Final Writer, Excellence, ProWrite, Word, WordPerfect Amiga,
  82.   WordPerfect 5, and Wordworth filters. Added text code support to the
  83.   WordPerfect filters, removed Line Feed options from inapplicable filters,
  84.   fixed indent problems in some filters, etc.
  85. - Fixed the tab problems when importing Wordworth files.
  86. - Fixed the indent problems with importing Wordworth files.
  87. - Added support for Final Writer release 3 files.
  88.  
  89. FONTS AND PRINTING:
  90. - Character mapping problems for PostScript bitmap font (ABF) files. They
  91.   did not map the same as the outline fonts, which caused some confusion.
  92. - Fixed Auto Ligature (fi & fl) problem with DMF fonts.
  93. - Fixed DMF character encoding errors (currency printing instead of space,
  94.   etc.)
  95. - Added support for SEAC in PostScript fonts. Accents characters that did
  96.   not appear in some fonts will now appear.
  97. - Fixed PostScript Landscape problems. (This will also make envelope
  98.   printing possible.)
  99. - Fixed enforcer hit problem when adding font directories containing
  100.   TrueType fonts or Gold Disk ATC files to the Font Preferences requester.
  101.   (The PostScript engine thought they were PFM files.)
  102. - Fixed PostScript printing of CS fonts (Times and Triumvirate) when no
  103.   PPD was selected. (This resulted in an Intellifont 69 error.)
  104. - Fixed non-PostScript printing problem of disappearing rotated text.
  105. - Changed HP printer default from manual to cassette.
  106. - Added more printer models to the Epson printer driver (Panasonic and
  107.   Star models). If you use the Epson driver, you should choose Settings/
  108.   Printing and reselect the Type and Model and then click on Save.
  109. - Fixed a memory problem with the Epson driver.
  110. - Changed preferences printing so that formfeeds would not be sent to the
  111.   port directly. (This will solve the page eject problem when using fax
  112.   software.)
  113. - Stop gadget for printing: it actually works now, albeit not always
  114.   immediately.
  115. - Fixed non-PostScript printing of Sine and inverse Sine gradient fills.
  116. - Added standard fax default resolutions to the IFF ILBM printer driver.
  117. - Improved non-PostScript halftone dither printing.
  118. - Fixed the PostScript bitmap picture and bitmap fill bit strip problem.
  119.   (A common symptom was a line printing on the right side of a picture.)
  120. - Fixed DeskJet envelope printing problems. (Note that until Landscape
  121.   printing is implemented for non-PostScript printers, you must create
  122.   your page in the same orientation as your paper. So if the short end of
  123.   the envelope is fed into the printer, you must create the envelope in
  124.   PageStream with the same orientation.)
  125.  
  126. GRAPHICS:
  127. - Radial fills are now implemented to screen and non-PostScript. (They were
  128.   already implemented to PostScript.)
  129. - Fixed the crash problem when resizing gradient filled objects to a very
  130.   small size.
  131. - Fixed pasting of bitmap pictures copied to the clipboard from BME.
  132.  
  133. GRAPHIC IMPORT/EXPORT:
  134. - Added support for 2 color PCX version 2 files that have both colors set
  135.   to the same value. The filter will set the second color to the opposite
  136.   of the first.
  137. - Fixed line cap problem with Art Expression EPS import.
  138. - Fixed problems loading some Freehand3 EPS files. Note that newer Freehand
  139.   files are not supported by the current filter.
  140.  
  141. DOCUMENT LOADING/SAVING:
  142. - Fixed the PageStream3 IFF DOC page spread loading problem.
  143. - Fixed the ProPage loading picture offset problem.
  144.  
  145. NEW FEATURES:
  146. - You can now do math in text gadgets in PageStream3. For example, if a
  147.   box's left coordinate is 8.125" and you want to move it right by 0.333"
  148.   but can't add that in your head, just enter the following into the Edit
  149.   palette's appropriate text gadget: 8.125"+0.333. When youpress Tab or
  150.   Return, the expression will be evaluated and its sum of 8.458" will
  151.   appear in the text gadget. The following math operators are supported:
  152.   + add; - subtract; * multiply; / divide; () parenthetical expressions.
  153.   Additionally, `pi' (3.1416...) may be entered.
  154. - Added two new popup gadgets to the Edit palette Character view for type
  155.   size and width. This makes changing the type size more convenient.
  156. - Added more preset type sizes and widths to the Font requester scrolling
  157.   lists.
  158. - Added four new default page sizes for envelopes and compact discs to
  159.   the New Document page size popup gadget. If you have a page size default
  160.   request, let us know.
  161. - For large screens only (900-1000 pixels wide): Added Insert Date and
  162.   Insert Time icons to the toolbar. If your document window is not wide
  163.   enough, you will not be able to see these icons; they are just a bonus
  164.   for those with large screens.
  165.  
  166. MISCELLANEOUS:
  167. - Fixed the delete page crashing problem.
  168. - Fixed the move page crashing problem.
  169. - Pasting now updates the document changed status.
  170. - Page palette no longer shows page icons when all documents are closed.
  171. - Fixed the Save then Quit bug which quit without saving.
  172. - You can no longer delete the default master page, which should never have
  173.   been possible.
  174. - The Toolbox and Edit palette icons in the toolbar will now be depressed
  175.   when the Toolbox and Edit palette are open. (ie, when their equivalent
  176.   menu commands are checkmarked.)
  177. - Added more options to the help system contents, and extended the
  178.   recommended reading list.
  179. - Documented PageLiner's startup options in the help system.
  180. - Changed the way unnamed tasks are unnamed. (If you don't use virtual
  181.   memory, this is irrelevant to you. If you do, you probably still don't
  182.   care. :)
  183.  
  184. SEND TO EDITOR AND MACRO SCRIPTS:
  185. - Fixed page number variable, and style tag ':', and greater than '>'
  186.   problems when sending text to an editor.
  187. - Improved send text to editor scripts. If text is selected, only the
  188.   selected text will be sent to the editor now. If text is not selected,
  189.   the entire article will be sent as before.
  190. - New "Mail Merge" script. See the help system for more information.
  191. - New "Print Font Specimens" (FontSpec.rexx) script. This will print a font
  192.   specimen sheet for each font installed in PageStream. (One font per
  193.   sheet. An option to print multiple fonts on a sheet will come later.)
  194. - New "Place Graphic At" (PlaceGraphicAt.rexx) script. This will import
  195.   graphics in a similar fashion to PageStream2.2. Shift drag to maintain
  196.   aspect ratio is supported.
  197. - Open Template macro: added avery label size 7664 (European 3.5" disk
  198.   labels). Fixed measurement system problems for European label sizes.
  199.  
  200. MACRO COMMANDS:
  201. - New commands: getfontfamilies, getfontstyles, getregion.
  202. - Renamed appendstyletag to appendstyletags, and savestyletag to
  203.   savestyletags.
  204. - Documented clearstyletag command.
  205. - Corrected documentation for setvariablename and setvariablevalue.
  206.  
  207. NOTES:
  208. - Vertical text wrap offsets were implemented in 3.0d, contrary to its
  209.   readme file. All text wrap options, but not fencing (irregular bitmap
  210.   picture text wrap) are now implemented.
  211.  
  212. BME:
  213. - Fixed a Color Palette bug. If the palette had been opened and closed,
  214.   and then the picture was closed, a crash could occur if the palette was
  215.   reopened while no pictures were open.
  216. - Fixed an Eye Dropper tool bug that allowed it to be used outside of the
  217.   picture.
  218. - Fixed a low memory crash problem.
  219. - Fixed a bug that caused the undo levels to be 1 less than the number in
  220.   the undo level gadget in the General Preferences requester.
  221. - Loading a Black & White picture now consumes less memory.
  222.  
  223. PAGELINER:
  224. - Now displays an alert if saving a file was unsuccessful in all cases.
  225.  
  226.  
  227. CHANGES FROM 3.0c TO 3.0d
  228. -------------------------
  229.  
  230. FONTS:
  231. - Triumvirate Oblique and Bold Oblique can now be used.
  232. - Now supports more PFM file variants.
  233.  
  234. TEXT:
  235. - Text entry speed has been increased. Text entry speed is still dependent
  236.   on the length of the article. Typing on the first line is not much faster
  237.   than 3.0c, but typing on the thirtieth line of an article is now twice as
  238.   fast as 3.0c.
  239. - The screen will now scroll as you type to keep the cursor visible.
  240. - Implemented double click to end text frame linking. At this time you must
  241.   double click anywhere to end linking. You can't single click a second
  242.   time on the last linked frame to end linking yet.
  243. - Holding down a Shift key while choosing Type/Manual Kern will remove all
  244.   manual kerning from the selected text. If you import a PageStream1 or 2
  245.   document that contained batch kerned text, you should use this to remove
  246.   the batch kerning (which was really manual kerning) and then apply Auto
  247.   Kerning instead.
  248. - Fixed leading problems on the first line without text.
  249. - Fixed all known tab highlighting problems.
  250. - Fixed manual kerning problems.
  251. - Fixed disappearing text problem with rotated frameless text objects.
  252. - Discontinuous selection: Ctrl for discontinous text selection works again.
  253. - Text codes: no longer converts accented characters to codes if they're
  254.   present in the selected character set. (Makes non-English text more
  255.   readable with SendToEditor in PageLiner.)
  256. - Text codes: fixed blackslash problem.
  257.  
  258. TEXT IMPORT/EXPORT:
  259. - Fixed WordPerfect 4.1 linefeed problem. (Words were joined without spaces.)
  260. - Fixed ProWrite margins import problem.
  261.  
  262. GRAPHICS:
  263. - Faster display of unrotated pictures.
  264. - Resizing objects now snaps to grid properly.
  265. - Resizing drawings, groups, etc, now have correct Edit palette values.
  266. - Implemented gradient fills at all angles, and all taper types, on screen
  267.   and to non-PostScript (already was done for PostScript).
  268. - Improved wide curve display and printing to non-PostScript.
  269. - Implemented all Text Wrap modes and horizontal offsets. Vertical offsets
  270.   are not implemented yet.
  271.  
  272. GRAPHIC IMPORT/EXPORT:
  273. - Placing a picture or drawing will now show the rotation and slant values
  274.   in the Edit palette (they were initially blank in 3.0c).
  275. - Fixed all known ProDraw Clip import stroke weight and fill problems.
  276. - Fixed problems importing EPS files with an EOF.
  277. - Fixed line weight problems for Art Expression EPS import.
  278.  
  279. DOCUMENT LOADING/SAVING:
  280. - Fixed ProPage loading picture scale problem.
  281.  
  282. PRINTING:
  283.   (some of these changes were made in printer drivers uploaded after 3.0c,
  284.   but before 3.0d. The improved drivers are also included with 3.0d.)
  285. - Fixed all known Preference printing crash problems. (Finally!)
  286. - Implemented the print progress meter. (The meter advances after rendering
  287.   (non-PostScript) or sending (PostScript) each object. Non-PostScript
  288.   printing is done in strips, and the meter will not advance while a strip
  289.   is sent to the printer; only when the strip is created.
  290. - Fixed PostScript printing of DMF fonts.
  291. - Fixed PostScript printing of spaces in Compugraphic fonts.
  292. - Fixed PostScript printing of hyphens and other characters.
  293. - Fixed PostScript printing of special characters on second use of font
  294.   (multiple page problem).
  295. - Faster printing of unrotated pictures to non-PostScript printers.
  296. - Added gamma correction for HP color printing. (Makes colors look better.)
  297. - Improved the color output on HP CMYK Deskjet printers by substituting K
  298.   for CMY when desirable.
  299. - Fixed Printing Preferences Source option problems for certain HP models.
  300. - Fixed Fargo.printer driver that was broken in 3.0c.
  301. - Added HP520, 540 and 560 models to the HP driver list.
  302. - Fixed a band problem with Floyd-Steinberg dithering.
  303. - Fixed PostScript tiling problem.
  304. - Fixed cancelling of printing to disk.
  305. - PostScript thumbnail printing: now inserts a default scale percentage so
  306.   that you don't accidentally print 100% thumbnails. Correct page numbers
  307.   are now printed with crop and reg marks for thumbnails.
  308. - Non-PostScript thumbnail printing is now implemented. Note that the
  309.   fancy thumbnail extras for PostScript such as page borders and numbers
  310.   are not printed to non-PostScript at this time.
  311. - Fixed problems when printing multiple ranges using a space instead of a
  312.   comma.
  313.  
  314. PAGESTREAM2 DOCUMENT LOADING:
  315. - Now loads text wrap options correctly. (Some text wrap options, including
  316.   offsets, are not implemented in 3.0d so they may not display correctly.)
  317. - Fixed bug in loading characters 1 to 31 (the font name was inserted into
  318.   the text instead of the character).
  319.  
  320. TUTORIALS:
  321. - SetLessonDefaults now sets the default window position to be above the
  322.   Edit palette, as shown in the tutorial lesson screenshots in the manual.
  323.  
  324. MISCELLANEOUS:
  325. - Fixed enforcer hit problems when opening a window, typing, highlighting
  326.   text, and creating a text frame.
  327. - Worked around conflict with CBE, PowerSnap and other clipboard utilities.
  328.   (Program locked up on first Copy after a Paste.) Not really a bug fix,
  329.   but the conflict has been avoided.
  330. - Fixed all known Undo crash problems.
  331. - Fixed Paste command to paste objects in the center of the window rather
  332.   than the objects' original position. (This was supposed to be done in
  333.   3.0c but didn't make it into that release.) Note: Hold down Shift while
  334.   choosing Paste to paste in the objects' original position.
  335. - Changed the default document window height to be 32 pixels from the
  336.   bottom of the screen, to leave room for the Edit palette. (If you have
  337.   already chosen Settings/Snapshot Display, this will not affect you.)
  338. - Improved visual mouse position accuracy at high magnifications.
  339. - Drawing with grid snap on will now display Edit palette coordinates in
  340.   multiples of the grid.
  341. - Enlarged the large toolboxes to be 50 percent larger than the small
  342.   toolboxes. The icons are still the same size. (This may change in the
  343.   future.)
  344. - Added two new optional PageStream3.prefs entries: COPYFTXT TRUE|FALSE and
  345.   COPYDR2D TRUE|FALSE. The default for both is true. Use these to stop
  346.   PageStream3 from copying IFF FTXT and/or IFF DR2D to the clipboard when
  347.   copying text and graphics, respectively. Turning off IFF DR2D is not a
  348.   big deal---you will only lose clipboard compatability with TypeSmith and
  349.   the handful of other programs that support DR2D in the clipboard. If you
  350.   don't need this compatibility, turn IFF DR2D off to cut object copying
  351.   times. (You will still be able to paste and import IFF DR2D, but you will
  352.   no longer copy the redundant data.) Turning off IFF FTXT is not
  353.   recommended, because you will lose compatibility with all other programs
  354.   that support text in the clipboard. ie: PageLiner, Turbotext, Final
  355.   Writer, etc.
  356. - Fixed Settings/Toolbox and Edit Palette checkmarks being out of synch
  357.   when starting PageStream.
  358. - The length of the rulers in Set Guides should now equal the size of the
  359.   page.
  360. - Fixed the problem with Object/Edit for a group's original width/height.
  361.  
  362. MACRO SCRIPTS:
  363. - Automatic Text Frame macro is now fully implemented.
  364. - Send to BME now maintains text wrap attributes.
  365. - Fixed Tech Report macro when Company registration was not set, and when
  366.   names were short.
  367. - Fixed enforcer hit during Open Template macro.
  368. - Added Avery 2160 label size for Open Template macro.
  369.  
  370. MACRO COMMANDS:
  371. - Recording a macro that executes an ARexx script stored in "Ram Disk:"
  372.   will now work. (The space in "Ram Disk:" was causing a problem.)
  373. - New commands: removepairkern
  374. - Improved commands: setpairkern, getcursor, settextrouting, settoolmode
  375.  
  376. NOTES:
  377. - Adding lots of fonts no longer slows down text entry speed. (As of v3.0c.)
  378.  
  379.  
  380. CHANGES FROM 3.0b TO 3.0c
  381. -------------------------
  382.  
  383. PAGESTREAM2 DOCUMENT LOADING:
  384. - Expanded PageStream2.fontlist file that recognizes more PD fonts.
  385. - Fixed the Macros/Analyze FONTLISTv2 macro which did not work at all.
  386. - Fixed problems with hanging outdents not being properly imported.
  387.  
  388. IMPORT/EXPORT:
  389. - Improved ASCII import filter quote conversion.
  390. - Fixed ProDraw Clip import line weight problems.
  391. - Implemented PageStream text code engine. Send to Editor for text now
  392.   works as advertised.
  393.  
  394. TEXT:
  395. - Text entry speed has been further increased. Typing text in a new frame
  396.   is twice as fast as 3.0b if the Edit palette is open, and 50% faster if
  397.   the Edit palette is closed. Having text attribute palettes no longer
  398.   slows down typing so text entry and editing speed is identical with the
  399.   Edit palette open and closed now.
  400. - Sped up rasterizing PostScript fonts. (The first time you use a PostScript
  401.   font at outline size, it will appear twice as fast as in 3.0b.)
  402. - Fixed the big text object bug. (Create a text object, delete it, create
  403.   another, crash.)
  404. - Obliqued PostScript fonts (ones that have the oblique bit set in the
  405.   font, such as most Futura and Uniform fonts) are now supported. (This
  406.   was added in the final version of the 3.0b update, in PS.font 1.0d.)
  407. - Fixed Paragraph Format, Right Indent.
  408. - Improved PostScript and Soft-Logik bitmap screen font scaling. (It was
  409.   not as good as v2.2 before, now it's better.)
  410. - Monospaced tracking is now implemented.
  411. - Changed default tab spacing to 0.333" as indicated in the manual.
  412. - Adding style tags will now update the palette lists.
  413. - Changed the default background of columns created with Create Columns
  414.   from transparent to opaque to make it the same as previous versions of
  415.   PageStream. (Users were confused by the grid and guides showing through
  416.   the column frames.)
  417. - Added support for PFM files as mentioned on page 14 of the manual. (Mac
  418.   Type 1 support is not done yet.) If you have a font with both AFM and
  419.   PFM files, you should generally use the PFM because it is smaller. (You
  420.   can delete the AFM if you wish.)
  421.  
  422. PRINTING:
  423. - Adding font re-encoding for PostScript printing. (In layman's terms, this
  424.   means that non-standard characters should now print. If you find characters
  425.   which still don't print, report the font type, font name and character
  426.   to us for testing.)
  427. - Changed the offsets for the HP, Epson and Fargo drivers. Offsets of 0,0
  428.   should now be suitable for most people. You MUST change your offsets in
  429.   the Printing Preferences requester or else your printing will be double
  430.   offset.
  431. - Fixed problems printing backslash characters to PostScript.
  432. - Made DMF fonts with spaces in their names print to PostScript. (ie,
  433.   Roman Bookface and West Side.)
  434. - Fixed the other A4 page size problem in the HP.printer driver.
  435. - Fixed potential crash problems with the Preference.printer driver.
  436. - Added more supported printer models to the Epson.printer driver.
  437. - Removed the 'M' printers from the HP driver model list. If you have a HP4M
  438.   4ML, 4MP..., you should use the PostScript driver, not the HP driver. If
  439.   for some reason you wish to print non-PostScript, use the corresponding
  440.   HP4, 4L, 4P... driver. (These were removed to avoid confusion.)
  441. - Stop gadget during printing is now implemented, but will not stop printing
  442.   until after the current object. (Just like 2.2.) Note that the progress
  443.   meter is not implemented yet.
  444.  
  445. MACROS & AREXX:
  446. - New commands: openbusyrequester, setbusyrequester, getbusyrequester,
  447.   closebusyrequester. (Look at the improved TechReport.REXX script for an
  448.   example of correct usage.)
  449. - getcoord macro works again. (This was used by the StickyNote script
  450.   which is why it didn't work in 3.0b.)
  451. - New parameters for: pasteobject, placegraphic, savedocument.
  452.  
  453. PAGELINER:
  454. - If you run it a second time (ie, if you use Send to Editor for text when
  455.   PageLiner is already started), it no longer presents a Shutdown/Cancel
  456.   requester.
  457. - Modified spell checker to ignore PageStream text codes.
  458.  
  459. MISC:
  460. - Save as Template is now implemented.
  461. - Fixed snap-to-grid problems. Objects should now snap correctly.
  462. - Fixed Paste command to paste objects in the center of the window rather
  463.   than the objects' original position.
  464. - Scrolling popup menu gadgets now scroll 10 times as fast instead of 4
  465.   times as fast when the mouse pointer is over the scroll arrow. This
  466.   makes it feel more responsive when you have a large number of fonts.
  467. - Scrolling popup menu gadgets now do not start to scroll when the mouse
  468.   pointer is over the up or down arrows until you move the mouse at least
  469.   2 pixels. This prevents the Font popup gadget in the Edit palette from
  470.   scrolling when it first opens.

  535. - If you converted 2.2 documents to 3.0 with previous versions of 3.0,
  536.   each article will really be one paragraph. You can fix this by
  537.   positioning the insertion point at the start of each 'paragraph' (new
  538.   line), then pressing Backspace and then Return. Alternatively, if you
  539.   haven't already made a change to the document in 3.0, simply reload the
  540.   2.2 document into 3.0b to convert it properly.
  541. - Text was being loaded with Track table set to Normal, which could change
  542.   line breaks. It now loads with Track table set to None.
  543. - Fixed the problem with PageStream2 text frames having multiple columns
  544.   on loading.

  546. MACROS & AREXX:

  549. MISC:
  550. - Loading a 3.0 document now preserves double-sided master page.

  554. - Settings/Screen: if the Display DPI text gadgets are blank, PageStream
  555.   will use the default resolution for most standard screen modes now. This
  556.   is convenient if you often switch between screens of different standard
  557.   resolutions. If you enter values, it won't switch automatically.
  558. - Problems with moving drawings containing groups and lines are resolved.

  696. - If you need to force a screen redraw because PageStream didn't properly
  697.   redraw the screen, choose Macros/Refresh Window. This is assigned to F10
  698.   as the default.

  700. KNOWN BUGS:
  701. - You cannot apply colors to text using the Color Palette.
  702. - You cannot customize a type style's color/line/fill attributes within a
  703.   style tag.
  704. - The Line/Fill button in the toolbar cannot be used for text; choose
  705.   Line/Fill from the Type menu instead.
  706. - Pasting a text frame will result in an object unable to contain text.
  707. - There are still some cursor-related problems in this version. Clicking
  708.   at the end of a line will place the cursor at the start of the next line,
  709.   although the cursor will appear at the end of the line. Clicking in a
  710.   blank article of linked frames will make the cursor appear in the last
  711.   linked frame. Clicking around a tab may place the cursor on the wrong
  712.   side of the tab. Pressing Return will not make the cursor appear to move
  713.   to the next line, although it really will be there. These problems will
  714.   be fixed in an upcoming update.
  715. - There are some unresolved style tag problems.
  716. - Resizing rotated objects does not work as expected.
  717. - Typing past the end of a frame will not advance the cursor to the next
  718.   frame if the next frame is on another page.
